๐งฐ Required Tools & Equipment
- โ Acoustic piano or digital keyboard
- โ Adjustable piano bench or flat-top sturdy chair
- โ Smartphone on tripod or stand
- โ Tennis ball or foam stress ball
๐ฆ Materials & Supplies
- โ Yoga block or non-slip footstool (if feet do not reach floor comfortably)
- โ Music score placed on music stand
โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Keep wrists neutral and dynamic; never let them drop below key level or hyper-extend upward to prevent repetitive strain.
- โข Keep shoulders relaxed and down away from the ears to prevent neck stiffness and trapped muscle tension.
- โข Support your body weight through your feet and sit bones rather than leaning heavily into your hands or keys.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Adjust Bench Distance and Sitting Depth
Position your piano bench so it directly faces the center of the keyboard, near Middle C. Sit down on the front half of the bench only, perching on your sit bones rather than leaning back into the full cushion. Slide the bench backward or forward until your knees rest just slightly under the bottom edge of the keybed.
- โข Only the front third to half of the bench is occupied by your thighs.
- โข Knees sit roughly 1 to 2 inches beneath the lower lip of the keyboard frame.
- โข Sitting too deep on the bench, which traps leg mobility and causes lower-back slumping.
- โข Positioning the bench too close so elbows are pushed behind the torso.
Calibrate Bench Height and Arm Angle
Adjust the bench height dials so that when you rest your fingers on the white keys, your forearms are roughly parallel to the floor. Your elbows should sit level with the top surface of the keys or slightly higher, forming an open angle of slightly more than 90 degrees at the elbow joint. If using a fixed-height chair that is too low, add firm, flat foam cushions until the correct height is reached.
- โข Forearms form a horizontal line leading straight to the keytops.
- โข Elbows hang naturally slightly in front of the torso line without winging outward.
- โข Setting the bench too low, which forces the wrists into a sharp upward bend.
- โข Setting the bench too high, causing excessive downward hunched shoulders.
Ground Feet and Establish Spinal Alignment
Place both feet flat on the floor directly beneath or slightly ahead of your knees to establish a solid tripod of balance with your sit bones. If your feet dangle, slide a firm yoga block or footstool beneath them so they bear steady, grounded weight. Lengthen your spine upward from the pelvis through the crown of your head, then take a deep breath and roll your shoulders up, back, and fully down into a relaxed posture.
- โข Both soles are completely flat on the floor or footrest.
- โข Shoulders are level and resting noticeably lower than the earlobes.
- โข Tucking feet backward under the bench or wrapping them around bench legs.
- โข Arching the lower back excessively or slouching forward toward the music stand.
Form the Natural Curved Hand Shape
Dangle your arms loosely down at your sides like wet ropes, observing how your fingers naturally curl inward when completely relaxed. Hold a tennis ball lightly in your palm without squeezing to feel the gentle dome shape under your knuckles, then remove the ball while maintaining that exact arch. Every joint in all five fingers should remain rounded out, forming a gentle bridge from the back of the hand to the fingertips.
- โข Knuckles form a raised, curved bridge across the top of the hand.
- โข Fingertip joints are curved outward rather than collapsed inward or locked flat.
- โข Collapsing the main knuckle bridge so the hand becomes flat like a pancake.
- โข Clenching the fingers into a tight, claw-like fist.
Position Hands on Keys with Level Wrists
Lift your hands by floating your forearms upward and place the fleshy pads of your fingertips on five adjacent white keys (e.g., C-D-E-F-G). Align the thumb so it rests on its outer side edge near the tip, while fingers 2 through 5 touch the keys with the front curves of their pads. Ensure your wrist forms a straight, neutral continuation of the forearm without dropping below the keyboard or cocking to the side.
- โข Wrists are completely level with the forearm, showing no deep skin creases.
- โข Thumb plays on its side tip while fingers 2-5 rest curved on their pads.
- โข Resting the base of the palms or wrists directly against the wooden rail under the keys.
- โข Allowing pinky fingers to collapse sideways rather than standing on their tips.
Execute Arm Drop and Tension Check
Lift your right hand two inches above the keys and let it fall freely under gravity, catching your arm weight on finger 3 on Middle C without collapsing your knuckle dome. Feel the wrist dip down slightly like a spring to absorb the landing, then immediately rebound back to neutral level. Turn your head side to side and breathe out fully to confirm no tension has locked in your neck, jaw, or shoulders during the drop.
- โข The middle finger supports the arm drop while maintaining its curved arch.
- โข The wrist cushions the impact with a soft, fluid vertical rebound.
- โข Hitting the key with stiff, locked arm muscles instead of releasing gravity weight.
- โข Letting the first joint of the finger buckle backwards upon landing.
Don’t have everything?
- No Adjustable piano bench? Sturdy flat chair padded with firm folded towels/books
- No Footstool or pedal extender? Firm yoga block or thick stack of hardcover books
- No Tennis ball (for hand shape)? Small apple or loosely crumpled paper ball
