๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Set Posture and Breath Foundation
Sit tall on the front edge of a firm chair with feet flat on the floor and shoulders dropped down and back. Take deep, silent breaths expanding your lower abdomen and ribs rather than lifting your chest or shoulders. Keep your neck straight and chin level to maintain an open, unrestricted airway for air delivery.
- โข Back is straight with space between lower back and chair backrest
- โข Shoulders remain completely still during deep inhalation
- โข Lifting shoulders toward ears during inhalation
- โข Slouching back into the chair, compressing the diaphragm
Form the Embouchure Without the Mouthpiece
Say the syllable 'Mmm' to bring your lips gently together, then firm the corners of your mouth downward as if forming a slight frown. Ensure your chin muscle is pulled flat and flat against the bone rather than bunched upward. Blow a focused stream of fast air through the center of your lips until they vibrate to create a natural, unforced buzzing sound.
- โข Corners of the mouth are locked firm and flat
- โข Chin texture is smooth and flat, not bunched like a peach pit
- โข Puffing out the cheeks with trapped air
- โข Pursing lips outward like a kiss, which stops lip vibration
Buzz Directly on the Mouthpiece
Hold the mouthpiece shank lightly between your thumb and index finger using only finger pressure. Place the rim centered horizontally on your lips, using a 50/50 upper-to-lower lip ratio. Inhale through the corners of your mouth and blow steady, energized air into the cup to produce a clear, sustained buzz resembling a buzzing bee.
- โข Mouthpiece is centered horizontally over the mouth
- โข Only the fingertips touch the shank without force applied to the face
- โข Jamming the mouthpiece firmly against the mouth to force a buzz
- โข Placing the rim too low, capturing only lower lip
Assemble and Grip the Trumpet
Insert the mouthpiece straight into the leadpipe and give it a gentle one-eighth turn clockwise to seal it without tapping. Grasp the valve casing with your left hand, placing your ring finger inside the third valve ring to support 100% of the instrument's weight. Curve your right hand into a gentle dome shape and place the pads of your three middle fingers centered on top of the valve caps, keeping your right pinky resting on top of the finger hook rather than inside it.
- โข Left hand bears entire weight of trumpet
- โข Right-hand fingers form an arch with fingertips resting flat on valve buttons
- โข Inserting pinky deep into the right-hand finger hook, which introduces tension
- โข Gripping the instrument tightly with the right hand instead of the left
Sound Your First Note (Second-Line G)
Bring the trumpet to your embouchure at a slight downward angle (about 10 to 15 degrees) without pressing it into your face. Leave all three valves unpressed (open fingering) and take a silent breath through the corners of your mouth. Blow a fast, narrow air stream while thinking the syllable 'Too' with your tongue to release the air, sounding a clear Second-Line G on your tuner.
- โข Instrument points slightly downward from mouth level
- โข Tuner app detects a stable 'G' (concert F) pitch
- โข Pushing the trumpet hard against the face to start the sound
- โข Starting the air with a throat cough rather than a light tongue release
Expand Downward to Low C
Keep the valves unpressed and widen your oral cavity slightly, as if whispering 'Toe' or 'Tah'. Blow a warmer, broader stream of air into the horn with relaxed lip centers to drop the pitch to Low C. Alternate holding Low C for 4 seconds, resting for 4 seconds, then playing Second-Line G for 4 seconds to establish control over the two primary open tones.
- โข Lip corners remain firm while center of aperture softens slightly
- โข Tuner registers steady Low C note
- โข Collapsing mouth corners when relaxing air speed, losing the tone
- โข Pressing valves down unnecessarily during open note transitions
