๐งฐ Required Tools & Equipment
- โ Alto or Tenor saxophone
- โ Saxophone neck strap
- โ Cork grease
- โ Mouthpiece cap
- โ Phone stand or mirror
๐ฆ Materials & Supplies
- โ Strength 2.0 saxophone reed
- โ Mouthpiece patch (bite cushion)
- โ Small cup of clean water
โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Adjust neck strap height so the saxophone comes directly to your mouth without bending your head down or hunching your shoulders.
- โข Avoid biting down hard into the lower lip; rely on firm lip corners rather than jaw clamping to prevent lip bruising.
- โข Keep practice volume moderate and take brief 2-minute pauses to prevent ear fatigue in small rooms.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Soak and Prepare the Reed
Submerge the thin tip half of the reed into a small cup of water for about 60 to 90 seconds, or moisten it thoroughly in your mouth. Gently press the flat back of the reed against your thumb to ensure it is evenly hydrated without warping. Handle the reed only by its thick heel to avoid chipping the delicate tip.
- โข Reed tip is evenly translucent and flat across the top with no visible dry spots or waviness.
- โข Leaving the reed submerged for several minutes, causing waterlogging and dull tone.
Mount the Reed onto the Mouthpiece
Apply a thin coat of cork grease to the neck cork if dry, then slide the mouthpiece on about three-quarters of the way with a slight twist. Slide the ligature onto the mouthpiece, slip the flat side of the reed under the ligature against the mouthpiece table, and align the tip. Tighten the ligature screws just enough to hold the reed firmly without crushing the cane fibers.
- โข A tiny hairline sliver of the black mouthpiece tip rail is visible above the reed tip.
- โข The reed is perfectly centered left-to-right along the side rails.
- โข Placing the reed too high past the mouthpiece tip or crookedly angled across the rails.
Form the Embouchure and Sound the Neck Alone
Detach the neck with the mouthpiece installed to practice tone generation without the heavy instrument body. Rest your top teeth directly onto the mouthpiece patch about a half-inch from the tip, cushion your bottom teeth with your slightly curled lower lip, and seal your mouth corners firmly inward like a drawstring. Blow a fast, supported column of warm air to produce a steady, clear pitch without puffing out your cheeks.
- โข Cheeks remain flat and engaged while blowing.
- โข The neck produces a steady, un-wavering tone (Concert Ab on an alto neck).
- โข Puffing out cheeks or biting down excessively, which pinches off the sound completely.
Attach Neck Strap and Assemble the Body
Loosen the saxophone body receiver screw, insert the neck tenon with a gentle twisting motion aligning the octave key mechanism, and lightly tighten the screw. Clip your neck strap securely to the ring on the back of the saxophone body. Adjust the strap slider until the mouthpiece swings straight into your mouth at resting posture without you needing to tilt your head forward or crane your neck.
- โข Mouthpiece meets your lips naturally when standing or sitting upright with relaxed shoulders.
- โข Letting the saxophone hang too low, forcing the neck and back into a strained forward slump.
Position Hands and Play Note B
Rest your right thumb under the lower thumb hook to steady the instrument body, keeping your right fingers curved lightly over the lower keys. Place your left thumb angled across the round black thumb rest on the upper back tube. Press down the left hand index finger on the second pearl key from the top (skip the small teardrop key) to finger note B, take a full belly breath, and blow a steady airstream.
- โข Left index finger rests cleanly on the main B key pearl without pressing the high auxiliary keys.
- โข Saxophone sounds a clear, stable middle B pitch.
- โข Accidentally pressing the tiny front F key or side palm keys with the base of the left hand.
Descend Through Notes A and G
Keep your left index finger down on the B key and add your left middle finger onto the next large pearl key to play note A. Maintain steady air support, then add your left ring finger to the third pearl key to produce note G. Practice holding each note for four slow counts, focusing on a smooth transition between notes without stopping your air flow.
- โข Left index, middle, and ring fingers rest centered on their respective pearl touches in a natural arch.
- โข Smooth, continuous sound transition between B, A, and G without honks or squeaks.
- โข Lifting the previous finger when pressing the next, rather than keeping fingers down cumulatively.
Don’t have everything?
- No Cork grease? Unscented lip balm or a tiny dab of petroleum jelly
- No Mouthpiece patch (cushion)? A small square of black electrical tape
