โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings

- โข Maintain a neutral spine and level chin to avoid neck compression and shoulder fatigue.
- โข Keep your wrists relaxed in an arched position without bending them at severe angles.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Produce a Tone on the Headjoint Alone
Hold the headjoint horizontally with both hands, leaving both ends open. Rest the inner rim of the embouchure hole right against the crease where your lower lip meets your chin. Form a gentle 'poo' or 'too' mouth shape, roll the tube slightly outward, and blow a flat, narrow airstream across the opposite rim to split the air.
- โข Lower lip covers roughly one-third of the embouchure hole in the mirror.
- โข A steady, clear whistle tone sounds without breathy hissing.
- โข Covering too much or too little of the hole with the bottom lip.
- โข Blowing down into the hole instead of across the far edge.
Control Pitch with Open and Closed Headjoint Ends
Blow a steady tone on the open headjoint, holding it for 3 to 4 seconds. While continuing to blow, firmly seal the open right-hand end of the tube with the palm of your right hand. Listen for the pitch to drop exactly one octave lower, and adjust your air speed to keep the lower note stable and clear.
- โข Right palm completely seals the open end with no air leakage.
- โข Headjoint drops cleanly to a stable lower octave pitch.
- โข Tensing the lips excessively to compensate for the lower pitch.
- โข Lifting the embouchure plate off the lip when moving the right hand.
Assemble the Full Flute Safely
Take the body section by the barrel where there are no keys and gently twist the headjoint into the body. Align the center of the headjoint embouchure hole with the centerline of the body's keys. Twist the footjoint onto the other end of the body, aligning its main rod with the center of the body keys.
- โข Embouchure hole, main key line, and footjoint mechanism align in a straight visual plane.
- โข No keys were squeezed or bent during assembly.
- โข Gripping the delicate key rods while twisting the joints together.
- โข Rocking joints back and forth instead of using smooth, one-way twisting motions.
Set Hand Position and Flute Balance
Hold the flute using the three-point balance method: resting on the base knuckle of the left index finger, the right thumb underneath the body, and the chin. Keep the flute angled slightly forward and tilted down about 15-20 degrees rather than strictly parallel to the floor. Keep all fingers softly curved hovering over their respective keys.
- โข Flute rests securely against the chin without slipping downward.
- โข Wrists are straight and fingers are curved like holding a tennis ball.
- โข Hooking the right thumb around the flute body or resting it past the keyline.
- โข Collapsing the left wrist backward against the underside of the flute.
Play Note B (Your First Note)
Place your left thumb on the long, flat B-thumb key on the back of the flute. Press down the first finger of your left hand onto the second key from the top, and rest your right pinky gently on the footjoint Eb key while keeping all other keys open. Take a calm breath, whisper 'too', and direct your airstream across the embouchure hole to produce a clear B4 note.
- โข Only the left thumb, left index, and right pinky are pressed down.
- โข A solid, resonant B pitch sounds for at least 3 seconds.
- โข Pressing the wrong left-thumb key (pressing the Bb lever instead of B).
- โข Blowing too hard, causing the note to crack into the higher octave.
Step Down to Notes A and G
Start by sustaining note B, then press down your left middle finger on the next available key to sound note A. After sustaining A, press down your left ring finger onto the adjacent key to sound note G. Maintain identical air speed and embouchure shape throughout the transitions to keep the tone full and connected.
- โข Fingers lower smoothly in sequence without lifting the right-hand pinky.
- โข Three distinct descending tones (B -> A -> G) sound smoothly with minimal breath gaps.
- โข Lifting fingers too far off the keys when releasing notes.
- โข Squeezing down too hard on the keys with tension in the forearms.
