๐งฐ Required Tools & Equipment
- โ Bb Clarinet
- โ Clarinet swab
- โ Mirror or phone camera in selfie mode
- โ Digital tuner app
๐ฆ Materials & Supplies
- โ Bb clarinet reed (Strength 2.0 or 2.5)
- โ Cork grease
- โ Small cup of clean water
โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Take breaks if your lower lip feels bruised or your jaw aches to prevent embouchure strain.
- โข Support the instrument weight correctly on the right thumb fleshy pad to avoid wrist and tendon strain.
- โข Never force cork joints together dry; apply cork grease to prevent wood cracking and joint breakage.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Moisten and Inspect the Reed
Dip the thin vamp of the reed into a small cup of water or place it in your mouth for about one minute. Inspect the tip against light to ensure there are no hairline cracks, splits, or chipped edges. A properly hydrated reed lies flat against the mouthpiece table without warping.
- โข Reed tip is evenly translucent and completely flat
- โข No visible micro-fractures along the tip
- โข Soaking the reed for too long, causing it to become waterlogged and wavy
- โข Touching the delicate tip with fingertips and chipping it
Align Reed and Ligature on Mouthpiece
Slide the barrel onto the mouthpiece with a gentle twisting motion. Place the flat back of the reed against the flat table of the mouthpiece, leaving a hairline sliver of black mouthpiece tip visible above the reed. Slide the ligature down over the reed and tighten the screws just until snug enough to prevent movement.
- โข A sliver of black mouthpiece is visible directly behind the reed tip
- โข Reed is centered laterally along the side rails of the mouthpiece
- โข Placing the reed too high, which makes blowing overly resistant and stuffy
- โข Overtightening ligature screws, which crushes the cane fibers
Form the Embouchure and Produce a Barrel Pitch
Curl your bottom lip slightly over your bottom teeth like a cushion and rest the reed on it about a half-inch from the tip. Anchor your top teeth directly onto the beak of the mouthpiece, draw the corners of your mouth in firmly like a drawstring bag, and blow a fast stream of air. Aim to produce a steady Concert F-sharp (clarinet G#) on just the mouthpiece and barrel setup.
- โข Chin is pulled flat and pointed downward rather than bunched up
- โข Top teeth rest firmly on the top beak without biting down excessively
- โข Puffing out cheeks instead of engaging the corners of the mouth
- โข Taking too little mouthpiece into the mouth, resulting in an airy hiss or no sound
Assemble the Full Clarinet Body
Carefully twist the upper joint into the lower joint, pressing down the upper ring keys to lift the bridge key over the lower joint's mechanism. Attach the bell to the bottom and slide your mouthpiece-barrel combo onto the top tenon. Align the bridge keys and ensure all tone holes line up in a straight vertical axis.
- โข Bridge keys overlap smoothly without contacting or bending metal
- โข Tone holes form a continuous straight line down the front of the body
- โข Twisting joints without lifting the upper ring keys, bending the delicate bridge mechanism
- โข Grabbing key rods tightly instead of holding bare wooden sections
Play Open G with Proper Posture
Sit upright and place your right thumb under the thumb rest between the knuckle and nail bed, angling the clarinet downward at roughly 35 to 45 degrees. Keep all fingers hovering relaxed over their respective tone holes without pressing any keys down. Take a deep diaphragmatic breath and blow a firm, supported stream of warm air to sound an Open G.
- โข Clarinet points downward at a 40-degree angle from the body
- โข Fingers are curved naturally like holding a soda can without touching tone holes
- โข Holding the instrument out too high like a trumpet or tucked flat against the chest
- โข Accidentally brushing side trill keys with the side of the index finger
Seal Holes to Sound E, D, and C
While holding a steady Open G tone, seal the back thumb hole with your left thumb pointing at the 2 o'clock position and seal the first front tone hole with the fleshy pad of your left index finger to produce E. Add your middle finger to produce D, then your ring finger to produce C. Keep firm air pressure throughout each transition to prevent the pitch from dropping or breaking into squeaks.
- โข Finger pads cover tone holes completely with circular impressions on skin
- โข Tuner registers clear, stable pitches for E, D, and C without octave jumps
- โข Using fingertips instead of fleshy finger pads, causing small air leaks and high-pitched squeaks
- โข Dropping breath speed when adding fingers down the instrument body
Don’t have everything?
- No Cork grease? Plain unscented petroleum jelly or lip balm (temporary use only)
- No Small water cup for reed soaking? Saliva in your mouth or a clean plastic bottle cap filled with water
