โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings

- โข Take frequent regular breathing pauses to avoid lightheadedness or hyperventilation.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Assemble and Align Recorder Joints
Gently twist the headjoint, middle section, and footjoint together without forcing. Align the tone holes on the middle body directly in line with the rectangular labium window on the headjoint. Angle the lowest single hole on the footjoint slightly to the right so your right pinky can reach it naturally.
- โข Middle tone holes form a straight line with the sound window
- โข Lowest hole is offset approximately 15 degrees to the right
- โข Forcing joints straight on without twisting, risking cracked sockets
- โข Leaving the footjoint aligned dead-center, making lower holes hard to reach
Set Posture and Hand Balance
Sit or stand upright with dropped shoulders, bringing the recorder to your mouth rather than hunching down. Place your left hand on the upper half and your right hand on the lower half to balance the weight on your right thumb. Hold the instrument pointing downward at roughly a 45-degree angle from your torso.
- โข Left hand positioned strictly above the right hand
- โข Recorder angled at 45 degrees downward from chin
- โข Swapping hands with the right hand on top
- โข Dropping elbows against the ribs or pointing the recorder straight down into the chest
Form Embouchure and Practice Tonguing
Rest the beak lightly between your lips just past your teeth without biting down. Form a gentle, airtight seal with your lips around the mouthpiece to prevent air leaks at the corners. Whisper the syllable 'doo' into the windway using a warm, gentle air stream, like fogging a pair of glasses.
- โข Lips form an airtight seal without puffed cheeks
- โข A clean, steady tone sounds without harsh overtones
- โข Blowing too hard, producing a loud, high-pitched screech
- โข Using the breath 'hoo' instead of tonguing with 'doo' to start the note
Seal and Play Note B
Cover the rear thumb hole completely with the fleshy pad of your left thumb. Place the pad of your left index finger over the top front hole, flattening the finger slightly so no air escapes. Articulate a gentle 'doo' breath to produce a warm, stable B pitch.
- โข Pads of left thumb and index finger fully flatten over holes
- โข A pure, low B tone sounds without airy hissing
- โข Using the hard fingertips instead of the fleshy pads, leaving tiny air leaks
- โข Clamping down with excessive finger force, causing hand cramps
Add Notes A and G
Keep the thumb and first finger sealed, then press the pad of your left middle finger over the second hole for note A. Next, add your left ring finger over the third hole to produce note G. Supply slightly warmer, slower breath as you add fingers, since lower notes require gentler air pressure.
- โข Top three front holes and rear thumb hole completely sealed
- โข Pitches step downward smoothly from B to A to G
- โข Lifting the index finger or thumb while reaching for lower holes
- โข Overblowing the low G note, which causes it to split into a high harmonic
Play First Melody and Swab Instrument
Play the three-note tune 'Hot Cross Buns' by tonguing: B-A-G (rest), B-A-G (rest), G-G-G-G, A-A-A-A, B-A-G. Maintain steady air and right-thumb support throughout the phrase. After playing, thread your microfiber cloth through the cleaning rod and gently wipe out interior moisture before storing.
- โข Accurate rhythmic articulation of each note in sequence
- โข Bore and windway dried and cleared of condensation
- โข Slurring all notes together without tonguing each pitch
- โข Leaving moisture inside the tube, which encourages bacterial buildup
