- โข Avoid collapsing knuckles or tensing shoulders during thumb crossovers.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Set Bench Height and Locate Middle C
Sit on the front half of the bench with your feet flat on the floor and spine straight. Find the group of two black keys near the center of the keyboard; Middle C is the white key immediately to the left of the leftmost black key in that pair. Position your phone camera to capture an unobstructed top-down or 45-degree angle of your right hand and keyboard.
- โข Forearms rest parallel to the floor
- โข Right thumb hovers directly over Middle C
- โข Sitting too close to the piano, which jams the elbows into the torso
- โข Slouching or resting heels off the floor
Shape the Hand and Position Fingers 1, 2, and 3
Curve your right fingers naturally as if resting your palm over a tennis ball, keeping knuckles gently domed. Place finger 1 (thumb) on Middle C, finger 2 (index) on D, and finger 3 (middle) on E. Ensure your fingertips rest on the white keys without collapsing the first finger joints.
- โข Fingers form a relaxed dome shape with rounded knuckles
- โข Pads of fingers 1, 2, and 3 rest centered on C, D, and E
- โข Collapsing the distal knuckle flat against the key surface
- โข Letting the pinky finger flare straight up in tension
Play the Initial Ascending Triad (C-D-E)
Press Middle C down using the side-tip pad of your thumb (finger 1) with steady weight from the arm. Lift slightly as finger 2 depresses D, then transition smoothly into finger 3 depressing E. Keep each note held until the next begins to create a connected, smooth (legato) sound.
- โข Three distinct, even tones sound consecutively
- โข Wrist stays level and absorbs the downward motion
- โข Staccato poking instead of a smooth connected legato transfer
- โข Lifting unused fingers high into the air
Execute the Thumb Under-Tuck to F
As finger 3 strikes E, glide your thumb smoothly underneath your palm toward the F key. Strike F with your thumb while releasing finger 3, keeping your elbow relaxed and tucked near your side rather than winging outward. Allow your hand to pivot lightly so the rest of the fingers shift up the keyboard naturally.
- โข Thumb lands cleanly on F without pausing the rhythm
- โข Right elbow remains stable and does not flare out to the right
- โข Twisting the entire forearm violently to reach F
- โข Lifting the whole hand off the keyboard instead of tucking smoothly
Ascend through G, A, B, and High C
With thumb anchored on F, fall naturally into the new hand position: place finger 2 on G, 3 on A, 4 on B, and 5 (pinky) on High C. Play these remaining four notes sequentially with uniform tone and tempo. Finish on High C with finger 5, keeping the knuckle tall and unsupported by excess arm weight.
- โข All eight ascending notes sound in an even, steady pulse
- โข Pinky strikes High C on its cushioned tip without buckling
- โข Rushing the final four notes after the thumb tuck
- โข Collapsing finger 4 or 5 flat onto the keys
Descend the Scale with Finger 3 Cross-Over
Play High C down through B, A, G, and F using fingers 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1. As finger 1 strikes F, cross finger 3 over the top of your thumb to land cleanly on E. Complete the descent by playing finger 2 on D and ending on Middle C with finger 1.
- โข Finger 3 arches cleanly over finger 1 onto E
- โข Scale finishes resting on Middle C with relaxed hand posture
- โข Crossing finger 4 or 2 over instead of finger 3
- โข Stumbling or adding a long pause during the crossover from F to E
