⚠️ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- • Support all instrument weight with the left hand to prevent right wrist strain and slide bending.
- • Always engage the slide lock when not actively playing to prevent the outer slide from dropping and denting.
- • Maintain a neutral spine and relaxed shoulders to avoid back tension during extended reach positions.
📋 Step-by-Step Guide (5 Steps)
Establish First Position and Right-Hand Grip
Hold the trombone with your left hand bearing all the weight, wrapping fingers securely around the neck pipe and slide crossbar. Grip the movable slide brace with the tips of your right thumb, index, and middle finger using a relaxed, flexible hold. Pull the slide all the way in against the bumper springs without forcing or slamming it to establish 1st position.
- • Slide is completely retracted against the rubber bumper without bouncing back.
- • Right wrist remains flat and flexible, holding the brace lightly with fingertips only.
- • Death-gripping the slide brace with the entire palm, locking the wrist.
- • Supporting instrument weight with the right hand, pulling the slide out of alignment.
Locate 3rd and 4th Positions Using the Bell Landmark
Push the outer slide forward until the outer slide crossbrace lines up almost flush with the front rim of the bell flare; this marks 3rd position. Extend the slide approximately two inches further past the bell rim until your right knuckles align with the bell's outer rim to locate 4th position. Note the visual relationship between the slide brace and the outer rim of your instrument's bell in the mirror.
- • 3rd position brace aligns precisely just shy of the outer bell edge.
- • 4th position outer slide collar sits directly level with the edge of the bell rim.
- • Using the bell as a physical stop instead of a visual line-of-sight marker.
- • Allowing the trombone to dip downward while extending outward.
Calibrate 2nd Position Halfway Point
Retract the slide to 1st position, then push outward approximately 2.5 to 3 inches—roughly halfway between 1st and 3rd positions. Play a steady middle concert F in 1st position, then slur down to E natural in 2nd position while watching your chromatic tuner. Make micro-adjustments with your fingertips until the tuner registers a centered E natural pitch.
- • Slide extension measures roughly 2 to 3 inches of exposed inner slide tube.
- • Tuner needle centers exactly on pitch E natural during sustained tone.
- • Pushing out too far into a flat 2nd position that sounds closer to 3rd position.
- • Overcompensating pitch with the lip/embouchure instead of moving the slide.
Extend to Lower Positions 5, 6, and 7
Push the slide past 4th position by another 3 to 4 inches to reach 5th position. Fully extend your right arm forward without dropping your shoulder to land in 6th position (roughly 1.5 to 2 inches from the slide stockings). To reach 7th position, rotate your right wrist slightly outward and hold the stay with only your fingertips, letting your shoulder open slightly without twisting your spine.
- • Arm is comfortably straight at 6th position without lunging forward.
- • 7th position utilizes extended fingertip reach while the torso remains square to the camera.
- • Leaning the entire upper body forward to reach 6th and 7th position.
- • Pulling the outer slide completely off the inner stockings by overextending.
Execute Muscle-Memory Position Jumps and Verification
Play a continuous glissando starting from 1st position down through 7th position on an F fundamental harmonic, keeping airflow steady. Next, practice landing cleanly on discrete positions (1-3-5-7, then 7-5-3-1) without glissando, checking each target against your chromatic tuner. Repeat the sequence five times eyes-closed, opening your eyes on each note to visually verify slide alignment against your physical reference markers.
- • Slide stops instantly and cleanly at each position marker with zero hunting or wobbling.
- • Tuner indicates within +/- 5 cents of pitch center on all discrete target notes.
- • Looking directly down at your hands instead of using peripheral visual landmarks and feel.
- • Slowing down air velocity during slide movements, causing notes to drop out.
Don’t have everything?
- No Chromatic tuner hardware? Smartphone tuner app (such as TonalEnergy, SoundCorset, or Tunable)
- No Slide lubricant? Mister bottle with clean water misted onto lightly lubricated inner slide tubes
