โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings

- โข Keep volume at or below 70 dB when using headphones to protect hearing.
- โข Maintain relaxed, curved fingers to avoid joint fatigue or tendon strain.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Set Up Ergonomic Seating and Camera Alignment
Position your bench so you sit facing the center of the keyboard with your feet flat on the floor. Adjust bench height until your forearms are parallel to the keybed and your elbows rest slightly in front of your torso. Aim your phone camera from a 45-degree elevated side angle to capture your hands, wrists, and keyboard clearly.
- โข Forearms form a horizontal line level with white keys
- โข Camera frame shows full keyboard center and both hands
- โข Sitting too close, forcing elbows back behind the ribcage
- โข Collapsing the wrists downward against the wooden keylip
Scan and Map the Black Key Patterns
Look across the full length of the keyboard to observe the repeating black key groups. Notice that the black keys alternate in distinct sets of two and sets of three across the entire board. Use your index and middle fingers to lightly touch and slide along every two-black-key cluster from left to right.
- โข Fingers touch only groups of 2 black keys across the instrument
- โข Clear visual recognition of the alternating 2-group and 3-group layout
- โข Counting white keys first instead of using black keys as landmarks
- โข Confusing the 3-black-key cluster with the 2-black-key cluster
Locate Middle C (C4) at Keyboard Center
Find the center point of your piano, usually marked by the maker's logo or keylock. Locate the two-black-key group closest to this central emblem; Middle C is the white key immediately to the left of these two black keys. Press Middle C down firmly with your right thumb to hear its baseline pitch.
- โข Thumb rests on the white key directly left of the central two-black-key pair
- โข Small tape marker placed neatly on the top edge of Middle C
- โข Selecting a C key one octave too low or high instead of the physical center
- โข Mistaking the white key between the two black keys (D) for C
Trace the Musical Alphabet from A to G
The piano uses only letters A through G, repeating continuously upward in pitch. Starting on Middle C, move rightward on adjacent white keys while naming them out loud: C, D, E, F, G, then cycle to A and B. Press each white key individually with your index finger to cement the forward alphabetical sequence.
- โข Index finger moves sequentially rightward from C through B
- โข Audible verbalization of letters matching each key strike
- โข Expecting an 'H' key instead of resetting to 'A' after 'G'
- โข Skipping the narrow space between E-F or B-C where no black key exists
Anchor White Keys to Black Key Landmarks
Solidify your key recognition by anchoring specific notes to black key groups. Remember that D is wedged between the two black keys, while F is immediately left of the three black keys, and B is directly right of the three black keys. Randomly call out D, F, or B and jump your hand directly to that key without counting up from C.
- โข Instant finger placement on D directly inside the two-black-key pocket
- โข Immediate placement on F directly left of the three-black-key cluster
- โข Counting up sequentially from C every time instead of using visual anchors
- โข Confusing F (left of three black keys) with C (left of two black keys)
Perform the 5-Finger Middle C Drill
Place your right-hand thumb (finger 1) on Middle C and rest fingers 2, 3, 4, and 5 naturally on D, E, F, and G so each key has one dedicated finger. Play each note sequentially from C up to G and back down to C, keeping fingertips curved like holding a tennis ball. Ensure each key fully releases before the next one sounds to build clean finger independence.
- โข All five fingers rest simultaneously on white keys C through G
- โข Hand maintains an arched, dome-like shape throughout the drill
- โข Collapsing the first finger knuckle flat against the key tops
- โข Lifting non-playing fingers high into the air in tension
