โš ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings

๐Ÿ“‹ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)

1

Prep the Workspace and Slacken Old Strings

Lay your ukulele flat on a soft cloth with the neck supported by a small rolled towel. Turn the tuning pegs clockwise (or counter-clockwise depending on the peg direction) to loosen all four strings until they are completely limp. Cut the loosened strings over the soundhole using wire cutters or simply untie them from the tuning posts.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Old strings are completely loose with zero tension before cutting.
  • โ€ข Ukulele body rests level and stable on the padded surface.
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Cutting strings while still under tension, causing them to whip and scratch the instrument or eyes.
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Always confirm strings are totally slack before clipping them.
2

Remove Old Strings and Clean the Fretboard

Unthread the cut string pieces from both the headstock tuning posts and the bridge holes. Use your microfiber cloth to wipe dust and sweat buildup off the headstock, fretboard, and around the bridge area while access is unobstructed. Apply a single drop of fretboard oil across the wood if it appears dry, rubbing it in thoroughly.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Bridge slots and peg holes are completely empty.
  • โ€ข Fretboard wood is clean, smooth, and free of dust build-up.
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Leaving string fragments caught inside the bridge slots.
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Check for sharp fret ends along the sides of the neck while wiping down.
3

Anchor the New Strings to the Bridge

Identify your strings by their labeled numbers or color codes (4th-G, 3rd-C, 2nd-E, 1st-A). Feed the 3rd string (C string, usually the thickest) through the bridge hole from the soundhole side toward the bottom edge. Tie a secure bridge knot by looping the short tail under and wrapping it twice through the loop, then pull tight against the tie block.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Knot sits flat and locked firmly against the back edge of the bridge tie block.
  • โ€ข Correct string gauge is matched to the proper bridge slot.
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Leaving the bridge knot loose, causing the string to slip out suddenly under tension.
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Keep the free ends trimmed away from the soundboard to avoid finish scratches.
4

Thread and Wind onto the Tuning Post

Pull the loose end of the string up the neck and thread it through the hole of the corresponding tuning peg. Pull the string taut, then pull back approximately 1.5 to 2 inches of slack to allow for neat winds around the post. Turn the tuning peg so the string winds inward toward the center of the headstock, guiding the wraps downward neatly beneath the hole.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข String wraps spiral downward around the post without overlapping messily.
  • โ€ข String leaves the post winding toward the center of the headstock.
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Winding outward, which causes strings to pull against the nut at incorrect angles.
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Avoid wrapping the string around your fingers tightly to prevent nylon friction burns.
5

Repeat for the Remaining Strings

Repeat the bridge knotting and peg threading process for the G (4th), E (2nd), and A (1st) strings in order. Ensure each string sits squarely in its corresponding nut slot at the top of the neck and bridge saddle groove at the bottom. Wind each peg until moderate tension is reached and the string produces a clear tone.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข All four strings are aligned inside their designated nut and saddle slots.
  • โ€ข Headstock posts have 2 to 4 neat coils each.
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Mixing up the G and A string positions or putting the thick C string in the high A slot.
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Check that the bridge knot tails lie flat and do not poke upward into your playing wrist.
6

Tune, Stretch, and Trim Excess String

Clip your digital tuner to the headstock and bring all strings up to pitch (G4-C4-E4-A4 for standard reentrant tuning). Gently lift each string 1 inch off the 12th fret with your fingers to stretch the nylon, then retune, repeating this 3-4 times. Clip the remaining excess string tails at both the headstock and bridge leaving about a quarter-inch safety tail.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Camera AI Checkpoint
  • โ€ข Digital tuner reads green on all four open strings (G-C-E-A).
  • โ€ข Excess string tails are cleanly trimmed without touching the soundboard.
๐Ÿ›‘ Watch Out For
  • โ€ข Trimming the string tails flush to the knot, leading to knots unraveling under tension.
โš ๏ธ Safety Note: Keep your face back while performing the initial manual string stretching.
