How to Change Strings on an Acoustic Guitar
Refresh your acoustic guitar's tone and playability by removing worn strings, seating fresh phosphor bronze strings into the bridge, and winding them securely to pitch.

๐งฐ Required Tools & Equipment
- โ String winder with bridge pin notch
- โ Wire cutters or diagonal pliers
- โ Digital guitar tuner or tuning app
- โ Microfiber cleaning cloth
๐ฆ Materials & Supplies
- โ New set of acoustic guitar strings (e.g., 12-53 light gauge phosphor bronze)
โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Point loose wire ends away from your eyes and fingers to prevent puncture wounds.
- โข Keep your face slightly turned away from the headstock while bringing strings up to full tension.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (7 Steps)
Slacken and Loosen the Old Strings
Turn each tuning peg clockwise (or toward you for bass strings) to reduce string tension completely. Spin the string winder on each peg until the string hangs limp and can be unwrapped easily by hand from the post hole. Unwind all six strings from their respective posts before touching the bridge.
- โข All six strings are completely slack and disconnected from the headstock posts.
- โข Cutting strings while they are still under high tension, which can whip up and damage the guitar finish or hurt your eyes.
Remove Bridge Pins and Old Strings
Use the notched end of your string winder to lever out each bridge pin gently from underneath its collar. Pull each pin straight up out of the hole, then pull the ball-end of the old string out of the bridge cavity. Coil the old strings into loops and discard them immediately to keep your workspace clear.
- โข All six bridge pins are removed and all old strings are cleared from the guitar body.
- โข Using metal pliers directly on the bridge pins, which crushes and gouges the soft plastic or wood pins.
Wipe Down Fretboard and Bridge Area
With all strings removed, take a dry microfiber cloth and wipe accumulated dust and finger oils off the fretboard, headstock, and around the bridge saddle. Work the cloth right against the fretwire edges where grime builds up. Inspect the nut slots and saddle to ensure they are free of debris.
- โข The fretboard wood and bridge top are visibly clean, dry, and free of dust or sticky residue.
- โข Using household glass cleaners or harsh chemical sprays that dry out and damage unfinished fretboard woods.
Anchor the New Strings in the Bridge
Bend the ball-end tip of the low E string (thickest string) at a slight 45-degree angle about half an inch from the ball. Drop the ball into the 6th string bridge hole, insert the bridge pin with its groove facing forward toward the guitar neck, and press down firmly. Pull upward on the string while holding the pin down with your thumb until you feel the ball lock against the underside of the guitar top.
- โข The bridge pin sits nearly flush with the bridge surface and resists upward tugs on the string.
- โข Letting the ball-end sit on the bottom tip of the pin instead of against the bridge plate, causing the pin to pop out under tension.
Thread and Wind onto the Headstock Post
Turn the 6th string tuning post hole so it aligns directly down the fretboard. Pass the string through the hole, pull it straight, then pull back approximately 1.5 to 2 inches of slack. Bend the string upward sharp against the post, and use your string winder to turn the peg so the string wraps neatly downward below the entry hole, keeping tension on the string with your other hand.
- โข The string has 2 to 3 neat, downward-spiraling coils around the post without overlapping or crossing over itself.
- โข Leaving too much slack, which creates messy overlapping winds that cause tuning instability.
Repeat for Remaining Strings and Tune to Pitch
Install the remaining strings from A (5th) down to high E (1st) following the same anchor and winding procedure. Turn your digital tuner on and bring each string slowly up to standard pitch (E-A-D-G-B-E). Gently grab each string near the 12th fret, lift it 1 inch off the board to stretch it, and re-tune back up to pitch until the tuning stabilizes.
- โข All six strings are seated in their nut slots and read in-tune on your digital tuner.
- โข Tuning an entire octave too high, which will snap the new string instantly.
Trim Excess String Ends
Position your wire cutters flush against the top edge of each tuning post next to the excess protruding wire. Snip each excess wire cleanly as close to the post as possible (leaving roughly 1/8 inch). Ensure the small cut stub points downward slightly so it cannot snag clothing or prick your fingers while playing.
- โข All six long wire tails are clipped off cleanly, leaving a tidy headstock with no dangling wire.
- โข Leaving long uncut string tails that scratch the headstock face or poke your hands while tuning.
Don’t have everything?
- No String winder with pin puller? Push the bridge pins up from inside the soundhole using a coin or the back of a spoon wrapped in a cloth
- No Wire cutters? Heavy-duty nail clippers (for plain unwound strings) or linesman pliers
- No Digital tuner? Free smartphone tuner app or reference pitch audio
