๐งฐ Required Tools & Equipment
- โ Piano keyboard or 61-key MIDI controller
- โ Smartphone with overhead tripod or high-angle mount
- โ Metronome app
๐ฆ Materials & Supplies
- โ Removable keyboard note labels or color dot stickers
- โ Blank staff or keyboard diagram sheet
- โ Pencil
โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Maintain a neutral, level wrist aligned with your forearm to avoid carpal tunnel strain.
- โข Keep knuckles rounded and relaxed, pressing keys with natural arm weight rather than pushing hard.
- โข Keep keyboard speaker or headphone audio below 70 dB to avoid acoustic fatigue.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Frame the Camera and Find Middle C
Mount your phone camera at a 45-degree angle pointing down so the camera clearly sees your wrists, fingers, and two octaves. Locate Middle C, which is the white key sitting directly to the left of the group of two black keys near the center of the keyboard. Rest your right thumb lightly on Middle C without pressing down.
- โข Camera shows both wrists elevated level with the keybed
- โข Right thumb rests directly on Middle C
- โข Positioning camera too low so finger numbers and black keys are obscured
- โข Collapsing wrists below the edge of the keybed
Map Half-Steps and Semitones
A half-step is the distance from any key to the very next immediate key, black or white. Start on C and count upward half-step by half-step: C to C-sharp (1), C-sharp to D (2), D to D-sharp (3), D-sharp to E (4). Place a temporary dot sticker on C, E, and G to visually mark your target intervals.
- โข Three stickers visibly placed on keys C, E, and G
- โข Finger correctly touches consecutive black and white keys during counting
- โข Skipping black keys when counting half-steps
- โข Counting the starting note as step 1 instead of step 0
Assemble the C Major Triad (Formula: 4 + 3)
Construct the Major triad formula: Root + 4 half-steps + 3 half-steps. Place finger 1 (thumb) on C, count up 4 half-steps to place finger 3 (middle) on E, then count up 3 more half-steps to place finger 5 (pinky) on G. Depress all three keys simultaneously with a gentle, unified drop of your hand.
- โข Fingers 1, 3, and 5 cleanly depress C, E, and G together
- โข Fingers 2 and 4 hover naturally without curling stiffly inward
- โข Playing with flat, locked fingers instead of a curved arch
- โข Accidentally sounding the adjacent F key with finger 4
Convert to C Minor via the Flat Third (Formula: 3 + 4)
To turn any major chord into a minor chord, lower the middle note (the 3rd) down by exactly one half-step while keeping the Root and 5th unchanged. Lift finger 3 from E and move it left to the black key, E-flat. Press C, E-flat, and G together with fingers 1, 3, and 5 to hear the darker, somber minor tonality.
- โข Finger 3 positioned securely on the black E-flat key
- โข Fingers 1 and 5 remain anchored on C and G
- โข Moving the thumb or pinky instead of solely shifting the third
- โข Resting finger 3 too far back on the thin tip of the black key causing it to slip
Apply the Formula to a New Root (D Major & D Minor)
Move your thumb to D as the root note. Calculate D Major by counting up 4 half-steps to F-sharp, then 3 half-steps to A (D-F#-A). Next, lower the 3rd by one half-step to natural F to play D Minor (D-F-A), using fingers 1-3-5 for both chords.
- โข D Major played with finger 3 on the black F-sharp key
- โข D Minor played with all three fingers on all-white keys (D-F-A)
- โข Assuming all major chords use only white keys
- โข Forgetting to reset half-step counts from the new root
Practice Broken and Blocked Chord Drills
Set your metronome to 60 BPM. Play C Major as an arpeggio (C, then E, then G individually), then play all three as a blocked chord on beat four. Switch to C Minor on the next measure, alternating back and forth for 2 minutes while maintaining a relaxed hand posture.
- โข Smooth transition between major and minor chords on beat 1
- โข Wrists stay bouncy and flexible during chord changes
- โข Rushing ahead of the metronome click
- โข Tensing the pinky finger into a rigid upward stick
